What the free pages do not collect

Reading this site asks nothing of you. There are no accounts, no login, no contact form and no comments, and the only forms that send anything are the free calendar and change alert forms described below. Our own code sets no cookies. The one script that is not ours is the hosting provider’s visit counter, Cloudflare Web Analytics, which counts page views without cookies and without identifying you: it records the page, the country and the browser type, nothing more. Two small things live in your browser’s session storage, which the browser clears when the tab closes: whether you closed the watering plan bar, and an unsent draft of the worksheet order form, so a cancelled payment does not lose your entries. Neither leaves your device.

Fonts are served from this site rather than from a font provider, so loading a page here does not tell any third party that you visited.

The calculators stay on your device

The water budget calculator and the sprinkler run time calculator do their arithmetic in your browser, using data files that are part of the page. Your yard size, plant choices, city selection and everything else you enter are never transmitted to us, never written to a server, and never saved anywhere after you close the tab.

That is a property of how the site is built rather than a promise about our intentions: there is no server-side component behind those pages to receive the numbers.

The free watering calendar and change alerts

The calendar form on a schedule page with set watering days asks for your email address and, where odd and even house numbers water on different days, your house number. The house number never leaves your browser: the page sends only whether it is odd or even. The calendar itself is made from the public schedule and holds nothing about you. Every other schedule page has a shorter form, “Alert me when it changes”, that asks only for your email address and signs you up for the change alerts.

We store your email address, the water supplier, odd or even, whether you ticked the change alert box (on the Fresno page it reads “Tell me when Fresno changes its watering days or hours (a few emails a year)”) or sent the shorter form (“By sending this form you ask us to email you when this schedule changes.”), the dates you asked and changed your choice, and a random code that makes the unsubscribe link work. The record sits in Cloudflare’s key-value storage, part of the hosting described below.

We send you one email with the calendar link, or with the shorter form one email that confirms the sign-up. If you tick the box or send the shorter form, we also write when that supplier changes its watering rules, and before your days switch to a new season. We send nothing else and never sell or share the list. The emails go out through Resend, our email delivery service.

Every email has an unsubscribe link. It opens a page with one button that stops the change alerts at once, and mail apps that show their own unsubscribe button stop them the same way. Without the box ticked, or after you unsubscribe, the record is deleted after 30 days. With the box ticked, or after the shorter form, it stays until you unsubscribe.

To stop one person from flooding someone else’s inbox, the form also keeps a scrambled form of your IP address for about an hour and a scrambled form of your email address for a day, only to count requests.

What we collect when you buy a document

Checkout runs on Stripe, our payment provider. You enter your email address, your name and your card details on Stripe’s secure page. The card number goes to Stripe only; we never see it and never store it. Stripe passes us the order: your email address, the amount, the card brand and its last four digits.

The details you entered to build the document, such as your city, your plants and the size of your yard, are saved with the order so we can generate the PDF, send it again if it goes missing, and correct it if you made a mistake. For a landscape worksheet that includes what the state form prints: the project applicant’s name, the phone number if you gave one, the project address and the zone list. These details are stored with the order at Stripe, our payment provider, not on a server of ours.

We use your email address to send the download link and the receipt, and to answer support questions about that order. We do not use it for marketing and never pass it to anyone except Stripe and the email delivery service that carries the message.

How long we keep order records

Order and payment records are kept for six years, the period UK accounting rules require. You can ask us at any time to delete the yard details attached to an order; the payment record itself stays for that period.

Payment processing by Stripe

Stripe processes every payment on this site over an encrypted connection and is certified to the highest level of the card industry security standard, PCI DSS Level 1. Stripe handles your card data under its own privacy policy at stripe.com/privacy. No system we run holds a card number.

Hosting and server logs

The site is hosted on Cloudflare Pages. Cloudflare keeps short-lived operational logs of requests, including IP addresses, as any web host does. Those logs exist to serve pages and to detect abuse. We do not mine them and do not connect them to anything else. Cloudflare Web Analytics gives us page view counts by page, country and browser type; it uses no cookies and no identifier that follows you between visits.

Email to our support address is delivered through Cloudflare Email Routing and read in an ordinary mailbox. Support messages are kept only as long as it takes to resolve the question.

If you are a California resident

California privacy law gives residents rights over personal information a business collects about them, including the right to know, to delete, to correct, and to opt out of sale or sharing.

We do not sell or share personal information, and we do not use it for cross-context behavioral advertising. If you never bought anything or asked for a calendar or change alerts, there is normally nothing about you for us to look up, hand over or delete. If you did, write to the support address below and we will answer within 45 days.

If you are in the United Kingdom

Under UK data protection law you can ask what we hold about you, have it corrected or deleted, and object to how it is used. Write to the support address below. We process order data to deliver what you bought and to meet accounting duties, a calendar request to send the calendar you asked for, and change alerts only with the consent you give by ticking the box or sending the shorter alert form, which the unsubscribe link withdraws at any time. If you are unhappy with our answer, you can complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office.

Children

This site is a gardening and landscape reference written for adults maintaining property. It is not directed at children, and we knowingly collect nothing from anyone under 18.

Changes and contact

If what we collect changes, this page is rewritten before that ships, and the date at the top moves.

Questions about privacy go to the support address at the bottom of this page.
