How the rule works

Corona homes water three days a week by address, only before 10 a.m. or after 8 p.m. Odd-numbered addresses water on Saturday, Monday and Wednesday. Even-numbered addresses water on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday. Watering on Friday is prohibited for every address. Sprinklers are limited to 20 minutes per station per watering day, and drip to 90 minutes. The rules run all year, with no winter schedule. Do not water during or within 48 hours after half an inch of rain. These are the Stage 2 rules of Municipal Code Section 13.26.060, and the city says it has been in Stage 2 since July 2016.

How many minutes to run sprinklers on each water day

One zone at a time, from the state climate table for Corona and the month you pick. The plan does every zone for every month.

1 What do you water in this zone?

3 Which month?

4 Nozzle brand or soil

Which sprinkler do you have?

Why rain covers it

October asks this zone for about 41 minutes of sprinkler time a week, from the state climate table for Corona. That is less than one run, so the sheet shows none.

Established plantings live on the season's rain. New plantings still want a hand watering in a dry week.

Rules and fines in Corona

Current stage Water Conservation Stage 2, Minimum Water Shortage, under Municipal Code 13.26.060. The Utilities Department's Water Rules & Tips page says the city has been in Stage 2 since July 2016, and its Answer Center says the city is currently in Stage 2 of the Water Conservation Ordinance. The 2025 Urban Water Management Plan (June 2026, Section 8.5.4) lists the Stage 2 watering rules as requirements that remain permanently active. Stage 2 aims to cut water use by ten to fifteen percent (13.26.060(B)).

The exceptions include drip irrigation and recycled water, each with its own conditions. The full text is below.

The fine amount is printed on each citation, and no set amount for watering violations was found.

Full text of the rules

Exceptions to the Corona rules

  • Section 13.26.060(C)(4) permits recycled (reclaimed) water for fruit trees, lawns, ground covers and ornamental trees and shrubs on any day and at any time, as long as it does not run into city streets or the storm drain system.
  • Drip irrigation has its own cap of 90 minutes per watering day instead of the 20-minute sprinkler cap (Water Rules & Tips page).
  • A customer can apply in writing, on the city form and with a processing fee, for relief from the Chapter 13.26 water use rules; the approving authority grants or denies it, and a denial can be appealed in writing to the City Manager (13.26.150).
  • No watering during or within 48 hours after rainfall of half an inch or more (13.26.040(B)(4); Water Rules & Tips page).
  • No runoff from the property onto neighboring land, roads or streets (13.26.040(B)(1)).
  • Leaks and broken sprinklers must be fixed in a timely manner (13.26.040(B)(2); Water Rules & Tips page).
  • No washing down sidewalks, driveways, patios or other paved areas, except for immediate safety or sanitation hazards (13.26.040(B)(3)).
  • Vehicles are washed only with a bucket and a hose with an automatic shut-off nozzle (Water Rules & Tips page).
  • Street trees must be kept alive (Water Rules & Tips page).

Corona watering questions

Which days can I water my yard in Corona?

It depends on the last digit of your street number. Odd-numbered addresses water on Saturday, Monday and Wednesday. Even-numbered addresses water on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday. Watering is prohibited for every home on Friday (Municipal Code 13.26.060(C)(2); Water Rules & Tips page).

What time of day can Corona residents run sprinklers?

Only between 8 p.m. and 10 a.m. on your assigned days. The city page puts it as no watering between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m., and Section 13.26.060 sets the windows as 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 a.m. Set your timer to start after 8 p.m. and finish by 10 a.m.

How long can each sprinkler station run in Corona?

Sprinklers are limited to 20 minutes maximum per station per watering day. The 20 minutes can be split into several cycle and soak runs, as long as the total per station stays at 20 minutes (Answer Center). Drip irrigation has a separate limit of 90 minutes per watering day (Water Rules & Tips page; 2025 UWMP Section 8.5.4).

Do I have to stop watering after it rains in Corona?

Yes, after rainfall of half an inch or more. Section 13.26.040(B)(4) bans watering landscapes with drinking water during and within 48 hours after rainfall of half an inch or more. Runoff onto the street is banned at all times (13.26.040(B)(1)).

What is the fine for breaking Corona's watering rules?

The first violation brings a written notice or an enforcement officer visit, and the city may order a flow restrictor (13.26.120(A)). Later violations can lead to a restrictor or a water shutoff (13.26.120(B)). A willful violation is a misdemeanor with a fine up to $1,000, up to thirty days in jail, or both (13.26.110(A)). Administrative citations under Chapter 1.08 print their own amount.

Is Corona still in Stage 2 water conservation?

Yes, by the city's own pages. The Water Rules & Tips page says Corona has been in Stage 2 since July 2016, and the Answer Center says the city is currently in Stage 2 of the Water Conservation Ordinance. Stage 2 aims to cut use by ten to fifteen percent. Stages 3 to 5 of Chapter 13.26 cut watering days further but are not in force.

Do these rules apply to Home Gardens or Temescal Valley?

Only to homes billed by the City of Corona Utilities Department, which serves Corona plus El Cerrito, Coronita and parts of Temescal Canyon (2025 UWMP Section 3.1). Home Gardens County Water District buys its water from Corona but bills its own customers, and Temescal Valley Water District is a separate supplier. Check the name on your water bill.

How do I report someone wasting water in Corona?

Call the Utilities Department's Water Resources Team at (951) 736-2234, email StopTheDrop@CoronaCA.gov, or file a report in the City's SeeClickFix app. Staff contact the home or business and work with them to fix the problem (Answer Center page).
