No sprinklers between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. on any day. The Las Vegas and Henderson codes apply the ban to drip too.
How the rule works
Las Vegas Valley homes run sprinklers only on the days of their watering group, and never on Sunday. The group letter is on the water bill or in the Southern Nevada Water Authority’s address lookup. In the Las Vegas Valley Water District and Boulder City table, groups A, C and E water Monday, Wednesday and Friday from September 1 to October 31 and from March 1 to April 30, and groups B, D and F water Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. From November 1 to February 28 each group has one day, from group A on Monday to group F on Saturday. From May 1 to August 31 every group has Monday to Saturday, but sprinkler watering is banned from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Henderson and North Las Vegas use the same seasons and assign their own group days. No drought stage applies: the member agencies made these restrictions permanent.
Rules and fines in Las Vegas
Current stage No drought stage applies to the watering rules. SNWA’s member agencies made the drought restrictions permanent in 2009, so the same seasonal schedule runs every year. SNWA reports a federal tier one shortage on the Colorado River and says near-term shortage declarations will not likely impact current customer use.
The exceptions include drip irrigation, hand watering, new plantings, smart controllers and fixing or testing sprinklers, each with its own conditions. The full text is below.
First: a notice and time to correct. Then $80, $160, $320, $640 and $1,280, on a Water District meter of 1 inch or less.

Exceptions to the Las Vegas rules
- Henderson and North Las Vegas follow the same seasons, Sunday ban and summer hours, but each city assigns the days of its own groups (Henderson Municipal Code 14.14.030.C; North Las Vegas 13.08.050.B, up to seven groups). Their customers find their days with the SNWA lookup or on the water bill, not in the Water District table.
- Hand watering with a hose is allowed any day and at any time, as long as water does not spray or flow off the property (Water District water waste exemptions).
- Supervised testing of an irrigation system is allowed when someone is present during the test (Water District water waste exemptions).
- New or reseeded landscape: daily watering for up to 14 days, once per calendar year, after calling the Water District at 702-822-8571 before planting. North Las Vegas allows 30 days for a new or reseeded lawn with notice to its Utilities Department, and its summer hours still apply (13.08.050.C.2). Exemptions must be arranged with the water agency first (SNWA).
- Drip and bubbler systems may run any day of the week, but not more days than the season allows (Water District water waste exemptions; North Las Vegas 13.08.050.C.3).
- Drip and the summer hours: the City of Las Vegas (14.08.140 and 14.08.150) and Henderson (14.14.030.B and D) list no drip exception to the 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. ban, while unincorporated Clark County (24.34.030(f)) and North Las Vegas (13.08.050.C.3) exempt drip, and Boulder City lists drip and bubbler systems among the exemptions to its water schedule (9-14-7.G.3). Where the Water District rules and a local ordinance differ, the stricter one prevails (Service Rule 10.2).
- North Las Vegas exempts properties with smart controllers that follow SNWA guidelines (13.08.050.C.7).
- Water may not spray or flow off the property, and a malfunctioning sprinkler or supply line must be fixed once it has been known for more than 48 hours (Service Rule 10.3(a)).
Fines in Las Vegas
- 1Water District, first violation: the customer is notified and given time to correct it (Service Rule 10.3(b)).
- 2Water District fees on the bill for a meter of 1 inch or less: 1st violation $80, 2nd $160, 3rd $320, 4th $640, five violations or more $1,280 (Appendix I, Table A.22). Fee levels follow the violation history of the preceding 18 months (Rule 7.26), and fees double with each further violation.
- 3Larger meters pay more, up to $5,120 for a meter of 3 inches or more (Table A.22).
- 4A first fee can be refunded after passing the Water District’s Curbing Water Waste online test within 60 days of the fee notice; a fee can be appealed in writing within 30 days of the notice.
- 5North Las Vegas: a warning letter, then $80, $160, $320, $640 and $1,280 for a meter of 1 inch or less, by violation history for the preceding twelve months (Municipal Code Table 13.08.110).
- 6Boulder City: a warning letter before any notice of violation, then fines of $75, $125, $200, $300 and $600 for a meter of 1 inch or less (Boulder City Code 9-14-12.B and D). Henderson sets its water waste penalties in its department service rules (Municipal Code 14.14.140); this page does not print them.
Report water waste
Report waste to the agency that serves the address. Las Vegas Valley Water District: the online Report Water Waste form or 702-822-8571. Henderson, North Las Vegas and Boulder City: the report links on SNWA’s Stop water waste page. SNWA’s watering group lookup also shows which agency serves an address.
Sprinkler minutes are not computed for Las Vegas: the free run time calculator and the personal plan use California's state climate table, so they cover California cities only.
Las Vegas watering questions
How do I find my watering group in Las Vegas?
The group letter is printed on the monthly water bill. The Southern Nevada Water Authority’s Find your watering days and group tool also returns it for a street address in Las Vegas, Henderson, North Las Vegas, Boulder City or Laughlin. Group days are mandatory: running sprinklers on another day is water waste and can bring a fee.
Which days does each Las Vegas watering group water?
In the Las Vegas Valley Water District table, which Boulder City also publishes, groups A, C and E water Monday, Wednesday and Friday in fall and spring, and groups B, D and F water Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. In winter each group has one day: A Monday, B Tuesday, C Wednesday, D Thursday, E Friday and F Saturday. In summer every group has Monday to Saturday.
Can I water on Sunday in Las Vegas?
Not with sprinklers, in any season. SNWA prohibits Sunday watering, and the Water District’s Service Rules say outdoor irrigation is prohibited on Sundays during all seasons (Rule 10.5(a)(2)). Watering with a handheld hose is allowed at any time.
What hours are banned for watering in a Las Vegas summer?
From May 1 through August 31, no sprinkler watering between 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. The Water District words the ban for spray irrigation (Service Rule 10.5(a)(1)). The City of Las Vegas (14.08.140), Henderson (14.14.030.B), North Las Vegas (13.08.050.A) and Clark County (24.34.020) codes ban watering by any method in those hours, and Boulder City's code bans watering then too (9-14-7.A). Clark County and North Las Vegas exempt drip systems from the hours, and Boulder City lists drip among the exemptions to its schedule; the Las Vegas and Henderson codes do not.
How much is the fine for watering on the wrong day in Las Vegas?
The Las Vegas Valley Water District first notifies the customer and allows time to correct the problem (Service Rule 10.3(b)). After that, fees go on the water bill: for a meter of 1 inch or less, $80 for the 1st violation, $160 for the 2nd, then $320, $640 and $1,280 for five or more, counted over the preceding 18 months (Appendix I, Table A.22). A first fee can be refunded after the Curbing Water Waste online test.
Does drip irrigation follow the group days in Las Vegas?
The Water District lets drip and bubbler systems run on any day of the week, as long as they water no more days than the season allows; North Las Vegas has the same rule (Municipal Code 13.08.050.C.3). The summer hours differ by city: the City of Las Vegas and Henderson codes list no drip exception, while unincorporated Clark County exempts low-volume drip (Code 24.34.030) and Boulder City lists drip and bubbler systems among the exemptions to its watering schedule (9-14-7.G.3).
Do Henderson and North Las Vegas use the same watering groups?
They follow the same seasons, the Sunday ban and the summer hours, but each city assigns the days of its own groups. Henderson assigns a group by service location (Municipal Code 14.14.030), and North Las Vegas may divide the city into as many as seven watering groups (13.08.050). Use the address lookup or the bill rather than the Water District table.
Is there a drought stage in Las Vegas now?
No local drought stage changes these rules. SNWA’s member agencies made the drought restrictions permanent in 2009, so the same seasonal schedule runs every year. SNWA reports a federal tier one shortage on the Colorado River and says near-term shortage declarations will not likely impact current customer use.
