How many minutes to run sprinklers on each water day

One zone at a time, from the state climate table for Madera and the month you pick. The plan does every zone for every month.

1 What do you water in this zone?
2 What waters this zone?
3 Which month?
October
4 Nozzle brand or soil

Which sprinkler do you have?

Why rain covers it

October asks this zone for about 35 minutes of sprinkler time a week, from the state climate table for Madera. That is less than one run, so the sheet shows none.

Established plantings live on the season's rain. New plantings still want a hand watering in a dry week.

Rules and fines in Madera

Current stage Madera's Water Use Regulations page posts Stage B for all City of Madera water customers, in effect since September 6, 2017, and Municipal Code 5-5.13(A)(2) sets the Stage B days and hours shown here. The city's general Water & Sewer FAQ still calls the current level Level C. No council action settling the difference was found, so the schedule here follows the dedicated regulations page.

The exceptions include drip irrigation, food gardens and recycled water, each with its own conditions. A written exception can also be requested. The full text is below.

First: $100. Then $225 and $500 within one year, under Municipal Code 1-9.06(B); an older city handout prints $75, $200 and $500.

Full text of the rules

Exceptions to the Madera rules

  • Drip irrigation of plants grown for personal food consumption is exempt from assigned days, but the 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. restriction remains. The exception excludes front-yard and street-side ornamental landscaping; front-yard fruit trees are not exempt (Municipal Code 5-5.13(C)).
  • Written hardship requests go to Public Works and require severe, unique circumstances or health and safety needs. Convenience alone is insufficient (Municipal Code 5-5.13(B)).
  • Household graywater use of no more than 100 gallons per parcel per day has a conditional exception subject to health requirements. Imported ordinary water does not create a schedule exception; imported recycled water or graywater has a separate conditional exception (Municipal Code 5-5.13(D)-(F)).
  • The Stage B handout, p. 1, permits car and trash-cart washing any day with a shutoff nozzle. It requires fixing leaks or adjusting sprinklers within five days after citation.
  • Water must not run beyond the property's frontage into a public right-of-way or onto adjoining property (Municipal Code 5-5.12).

Fines in Madera

  1. 1Municipal Code 5-5.13(G) refers water infractions to 1-9.06(B). That section sets $100 for the first infraction, $225 for a second violation of the same provision within one year and $500 for each additional violation within one year. Section 1-9.06(C) permits a council resolution to set lower amounts.
  2. 2The city's older Stage B handout still prints $75, $200 and $500. A current water-specific resolution establishing those lower amounts was not found, so the amount currently charged cannot be resolved from the reviewed sources.

Report water waste

Report water waste to City of Madera Public Works at 559-661-5466 or through https://forms.madera.gov/Report-Issue (Water & Sewer page). City utility billing is 559-661-5459.

Madera watering questions

Why does this Madera page use Stage B when another city page says C?

The dedicated Water Use Regulations page links a Stage B notice effective September 6, 2017. Its days match Municipal Code 5-5.13(A)(2). The general Water & Sewer FAQ labels the level C. A newer council action resolving the discrepancy was not found.

Are Madera's 15-minute sprinkler settings a fixed limit?

The Stage B handout says settings longer than 15 minutes may be wasteful. That warning is not an unconditional minute cap. Municipal Code 5-5.12 separately prohibits runoff beyond the frontage into a public right-of-way or adjoining property.

Does Madera's food-garden exception also remove the daytime restriction?

No. Municipal Code 5-5.13(C) exempts qualifying personal food crops using drip irrigation from assigned days, while retaining the 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. restriction. Front-yard and street-side ornamental landscaping, including front-yard fruit trees, is outside this exception.

Which Madera water-waste fine amounts are documented?

Code 5-5.13(G) points to 1-9.06(B), which lists $100, $225 and $500 for repeat infractions within one year. The Stage B handout prints $75, $200 and $500. The code allows lower amounts by council resolution, but a current water-specific resolution was not located.

How does a Madera customer request a watering hardship exception?

Municipal Code 5-5.13(B) provides a written request to Public Works for severe, unique hardship or health and safety needs. It expressly excludes convenience alone as a reason for changing the restrictions.

Where should I report a Madera water-waste problem?

The city's Water & Sewer page directs reports to Public Works at 559-661-5466 or the city's Report Issue form. For questions about whether the city bills the property for water, utility billing is 559-661-5459.
