No sprinklers between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. on any day.
How the rule works
Fort Worth homes run sprinklers on two assigned days a week, all year. Houses with an address ending in an even number (0, 2, 4, 6 or 8) water on Wednesday and Saturday; houses ending in an odd number (1, 3, 5, 7 or 9) water on Thursday and Sunday. Apartment complexes and businesses water on Tuesday and Friday, and nobody waters on Monday. Sprinklers and irrigation systems stay off between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. on every day. The days and hours do not limit a handheld hose, drip irrigation, a soaker hose or a tree bubbler (Section 35-151(a)(1)). These are standing rules of Fort Worth City Code Section 35-151, not a drought stage, and no drought stage declaration was found on Fort Worth Water pages.
Rules and fines in Fort Worth
Current stage No drought stage declaration found. The twice-weekly schedule by address and the 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. ban are standing, year-round rules of Fort Worth City Code Section 35-151, not a drought stage. The 2024 Drought Contingency and Emergency Water Management Plan (adopted April 23, 2024, effective May 1, 2024) lets the City Manager order Stage 1, 2 or 3 when a trigger is met; Stage 2 cuts sprinklers to once a week and Stage 3 bans landscape watering except by hand-held hose, soaker hose or drip. Fort Worth Water pages and city bulletins show no stage in force.
The exceptions include drip irrigation, hand watering, new plantings, recycled water and fixing or testing sprinklers, each with its own conditions. A written exception can also be requested. The full text is below.
First: a written warning. Then $25, $50 and $75, then a citation and an irrigation lock-out.

Exceptions to the Fort Worth rules
- The days and hours do not limit a handheld hose, drip irrigation, a soaker hose or a tree bubbler (Section 35-151(a)(1), (b) and (c)).
- Maintenance, repair or testing of an irrigation system, and dust control of a sports field, are affirmative defenses, limited to a period of two days no more than once every 30 days; longer work needs a variance (Section 35-151(f)).
- Variances: the water director can grant variances from the twice-weekly schedule for emergency health, sanitation or fire safety conditions, technical limits, or equal water savings, and to establish hydromulch, grass sod or grass seed for new lawns. Petitions are in writing (Section 35-151(g)(3); Irrigation Schedule Variance form).
- Watering with a registered alternative source (a well, reclaimed or reused water, or Trinity River water) is exempt from prosecution if the source is registered with the city, proven to the water director and protected under the backflow program (Section 35-151(h)).
- No watering that sends a constant stream of water off the lawn onto a street or drainage area, and no irrigation system running during any form of precipitation (Section 35-151(d)).
- No running an irrigation system with a broken or missing sprinkler head, or one not maintained to prevent waste (Section 35-151(e)). Home irrigation systems installed on or after June 1, 2007 must have working rain and freeze sensors (Section 35-152(d)).
Fines in Fort Worth
- 1First: a written warning before any fee (Section 35-155(a)(1) and (2), as amended by Ordinance 28123-11-2025). The city mails yellow conservation notice postcards.
- 2Then administrative fees added to the next water bill: $25.00, then $50.00, then $75.00 (Fort Worth Water fee table and city bulletin). The city's table calls these the first, second and third violation.
- 3Continued violations: a citation and a lock-out of the irrigation system or meter, with a lock-out fee; water service to the irrigation system can be terminated after a lock-out (Section 35-155(a)(3) to (5) and (c)). Each day of violation is a separate violation (Section 35-155).
- 4A customer can request a hearing in person at the water department within 15 business days of the written notice of violation (Section 35-156(b)).

Fort Worth watering questions
Which days can I water my lawn in Fort Worth?
It depends on the last digit of your house number. Residential addresses ending in 0, 2, 4, 6 or 8 water on Wednesday and Saturday. Addresses ending in 1, 3, 5, 7 or 9 water on Thursday and Sunday. Monday is not a watering day for anyone (City Code Section 35-151(a)(2) and the Fort Worth Water schedule).
My apartment complex waters on Tuesday. Is that the right day in Fort Worth?
Yes. Section 35-151(a)(2) puts all nonresidential locations, which it says include apartment complexes, businesses, industries, parks and street medians, on Tuesday and Friday. The even and odd days are for residential addresses. Fort Worth Water's schedule lists apartments under its non-residential sites too.
What time of day can I run my sprinklers in Fort Worth?
On your assigned day, from 12 midnight to 10 a.m. and from 6 p.m. to 11:59 p.m. Section 35-151(b) bans lawn and landscape watering between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. on every day of the year. Fort Worth Water warns that a system set to water at or near midnight can run into the next day, one of the common causes of its violation notices.
Can I water by hand or with drip lines on other days in Fort Worth?
Section 35-151(a)(1) takes a handheld hose, drip irrigation, a soaker hose and a tree bubbler out of the day and hour limits. Fort Worth Water says a rotary or oscillating sprinkler on the end of a hose does not count as hand watering, and that drip is meant only for foundations, trees and other high value plants.
What happens if I water on the wrong day in Fort Worth?
Section 35-155, as amended in November 2025, has the water director send a written warning first. After that, administrative fees go on your water bill: $25.00, then $50.00, then $75.00, per the Fort Worth Water fee table. Continued violations bring a citation and a lock-out of the irrigation system or meter. Each day of violation counts separately, and you can request a hearing within 15 business days of the notice.
Does Fort Worth have a drought stage in effect right now?
No drought stage declaration was found on Fort Worth Water pages. The twice-weekly schedule is a permanent rule of the City Code. The 2024 Drought Contingency and Emergency Water Management Plan lets the City Manager order stricter stages: Stage 2 limits sprinklers to once a week, and Stage 3 bans landscape watering except by hand-held hose, soaker hose or drip.
Can I get extra watering days for new sod or seed in Fort Worth?
Only with a variance. Section 35-151(g)(2) lets the water director grant variances to establish hydromulch, grass sod or grass seed for new lawns, and Section 35-151(g)(3) requires every petition in writing. Fort Worth Water takes requests through its Irrigation Schedule Variance form. Keep to your regular days until the city confirms the variance.
Do Fort Worth watering rules apply in cities that buy Fort Worth water?
Not directly. Fort Worth Water sells water wholesale to 33 customers, such as Burleson, Keller, Haltom City and Southlake. Each city bills and enforces its own ordinance, and the drought plan lets them use a different twice-a-week schedule. If your bill does not come from Fort Worth Water, follow your own city's days.
