How often to water Aleppo pine in California

In July in the Central Valley, established Aleppo pine in loam needs a deep watering about every 20 days: about 55 gallons each time under a 10 foot canopy, about 19 gallons a week. Aleppo pine is a fast growing evergreen conifer with long needles and an open, rounded crown that broadens with age. Native across much of the Mediterranean, it handles heat, wind and poor rocky soil with ease once established. A newly planted tree still needs regular soakings while its roots reach out into the surrounding ground.

How this is worked out: established roots fill the top 1.5 feet of soil, and you water again when that soil has dried halfway. Loam soil holds about 1.5 inches of water per foot. Water the whole area under the branches, and skip a watering after a good soaking rain.

Which soil do you have?

Dig down a few inches, take a handful of moist soil and squeeze it.

  • Sandy: gritty, falls apart when you open your hand, will not form a ball.
  • Loam: forms a soft ball that crumbles when you poke it.
  • Clay: forms a firm, sticky ball and squeezes out into a ribbon between thumb and finger.

Still not sure? Pick loam. Most garden beds sit between sand and clay.

How to measure canopy width

A tree with its canopy width marked across the widest branches and the circle under it shaded blue

Measure across the branches, from the tips of the outer leaves on one side to the tips on the other. A tape works, or pace it out.

Water the whole circle under the branches, shown in blue. The gallons here cover that circle.

A wider canopy means more gallons each watering, not more waterings. While the tree is young, measure again each spring.

How to tell it needs water

  • Soil dry several inches down at the edge of a young root ball signals it needs a deep soak
  • Increased shedding of older needles can accompany drought, so check moisture when the shedding pattern changes
  • An older Aleppo pine naturally has an open crown, but investigate a new decline in growth or needle cover
  • Yellow or brown patches above persistently wet soil call for a drainage check before more irrigation
  • Inspect damaged bark near a damp trunk base and seek a diagnosis if the affected area expands

How to water it

  • Water a young Aleppo pine over its full root ball, widening the soaked area as the canopy spreads
  • Soak the root zone deeply with drip or a slow hose rather than light, frequent sprinkling
  • Keep irrigation away from the trunk base and move it toward the drip line as the tree matures
  • Use fast draining soil, since this pine tolerates poor, rocky ground better than constantly damp roots
  • Taper off supplemental water on an established tree once its root system has spread well beyond the planting hole

Through the seasons

Young Aleppo pines need moisture while establishing, and mature trees are drought tolerant. Keep checking the soil during prolonged dry weather instead of assuming deep roots provide a permanent supply. Needles remain on this evergreen through winter, when coastal and valley rain can meet much of the demand. Check again if winter stays dry, particularly in desert gardens. WUCOLS rates Aleppo pine low water on the north-central coast, in the Central Valley, on the south coast and in South Inland. The high desert and low desert both have moderate water ratings.

In pots

An Aleppo pine can become a large landscape tree, so plan space for its mature crown before keeping a seedling in a container. Check the mix a couple of inches down during California summer heat and water when it is drying there. Let excess drain through the holes, then empty the saucer. Inspect the root ball periodically and move the tree to a suitable container or planting site before roots become crowded. In winter, check below the surface before adding water.

How this is worked out: the WUCOLS water rating for each zone times that zone’s climate for the month. A dash means WUCOLS does not rate the plant there. The figures are what the plant uses, before sprinkler losses.

Questions people ask

How often should I water Aleppo pine in summer?

In July, established Aleppo pine in loam needs a deep watering about every 20 days in the Central Valley, about every 27 days on the south coast and about every 22 days in the South Inland zone. Sandy soil holds less water, so waterings come closer together. Clay stretches them. Check the soil before each watering and skip one after a soaking rain.

How much water does Aleppo pine need per day?

In July in the Central Valley, established Aleppo pine needs about 2.7 gallons a day under a 10 foot canopy and about 11 gallons a day under a 20 foot canopy. Give it in deep waterings spread days apart rather than a little every day, so the whole root zone gets wet.

Does watering for Aleppo pine change across California?

Yes. WUCOLS rates Aleppo pine separately for each of the six California climate zones: low water in the North-Central Coastal zone, low water in the Central Valley zone, low water in the South Coastal zone, low water in the South Inland zone, moderate water in the High and Intermediate Desert zone, moderate water in the Low Desert zone. The monthly table above shows how the same rating translates into different gallon amounts as reference evapotranspiration changes.

How long does a young Aleppo pine need extra water?

Keep checking the root ball and surrounding ground until the tree is established. Then adjust irrigation to local soil conditions and its regional water rating. Establishment alone is not a reason to stop checking through a dry California summer.

Why does my Aleppo pine have an open, sparse canopy?

An airy, irregular crown is a normal feature of an aging Aleppo pine. A recent loss of needles or weak new growth still deserves inspection. Compare the current tree with its previous condition and check the soil before changing irrigation.

Can Aleppo pine handle wind and salt spray?

Aleppo pine tolerates wind exposure and coastal salt spray. It still needs a site where water drains away from the roots. Check soil conditions separately from how exposed the canopy is.

Should I water an old Aleppo pine during a drought?

Check the root zone during a long drought, even where the tree carries a low water rating. Drought can increase needle shedding, and a dry root zone may need a thorough soak. Avoid repeatedly wetting only the soil beside the trunk.

Why are the needles browning on just one side of my Aleppo pine?

Compare affected branches with the healthy side and inspect the nearby soil, bark and needles. Browning patterns alone do not distinguish dry soil from pests or disease. Seek an assessment if the affected area keeps expanding.
