How often to water bushy clematis in California
In July in the Central Valley, established bushy clematis in loam needs a deep watering about every 5 days: about 1.5 gallons each time for a plant 2 feet across, about 1.9 gallons a week. Bushy clematis is a non-climbing clematis from central Europe, Russia and China. It forms an upright, spreading clump 1 to 3 feet tall with simple, undivided leaves, unlike most clematis. Its flowers draw bees, butterflies and hummingbirds. It wants moist, well-drained loam rich in organic matter, and all parts are highly poisonous.

Type your city above and the days between waterings and the gallons appear here, worked out from your city's climate table. Or read the figures by climate zone further down.
How this is worked out: established roots fill the top 1 foot of soil, and you water again when that soil has dried halfway. Loam soil holds about 1.5 inches of water per foot. Water the whole area the plant covers, and skip a watering after a good soaking rain.
How to tell it needs water
- Mulched soil dry 2 inches down at the base in summer means bushy clematis wants water
- Stems flopping and leaves wilting by midafternoon point to a dry root zone
- Bloom fading early during a hot, dry week can follow too little water
- White powder on leaves points to powdery mildew rather than thirst
How to water it
- Water the base slowly, keeping the soil evenly moist through the growing season
- Moisten the root zone about 6 inches deep, then let the surface dry slightly
- Plant in full sun in loam rich in organic matter
- Mulch to keep the roots cool and hold moisture
- Cut it back hard in early spring
Through the seasons
Water new plants regularly through the first summer. Established clumps want steady, moderate moisture and cool, mulched roots from spring through bloom. Stems die back in winter, when the clump needs only light watering, then grows again from the base after a hard spring cutback. WUCOLS rates bushy clematis moderate water on the north-central coast, in the Central Valley and on the south coast. WUCOLS has not evaluated it for South Inland, the high desert or the low desert.
In pots
Bushy clematis grows well in a large container, where its sprawling stems can lean on a short hoop. Use a rich, well-drained mix. Water whenever the upper inch feels dry, until water seeps out below. In summer, check pots daily in hot weather. Empty the saucer. Mulch the top of the pot to keep roots cool. In winter, after you cut it down, water only lightly.

Questions people ask
How often should I water bushy clematis in summer?
In July, established bushy clematis in loam needs a deep watering about every 5 days in the Central Valley and about every 7 days on the south coast. Sandy soil holds less water, so waterings come closer together. Clay stretches them. Check the soil before each watering and skip one after a soaking rain.
How much water does bushy clematis need per day?
In July in the Central Valley, established bushy clematis needs about 0.3 gallons a day for a plant 2 feet across and about 1.1 gallons a day for a plant 4 feet across. Give it in deep waterings spread days apart rather than a little every day, so the whole root zone gets wet.
Does watering for bushy clematis change across California?
Yes. WUCOLS rates bushy clematis separately for each of the six California climate zones: moderate water in the North-Central Coastal zone, moderate water in the Central Valley zone, moderate water in the South Coastal zone, not evaluated in the South Inland zone, not evaluated in the High and Intermediate Desert zone, not evaluated in the Low Desert zone. The monthly table above shows how the same rating translates into different gallon amounts as reference evapotranspiration changes.
Does bushy clematis climb?
No, unlike most clematis it does not climb. It forms an upright, spreading clump. A short support keeps it neat.
When should I prune bushy clematis?
Cut it back hard in early spring. It blooms on new growth. Water as new shoots appear.
Does bushy clematis need full sun?
Full sun gives the best bloom. In too much shade it sprawls and may need staking. Keep its roots cool with mulch.
Is bushy clematis poisonous?
Yes, it has high severity poison characteristics. The flowers, leaves and sap are toxic to dogs, cats and horses, and the sap can irritate skin. Wear gloves when pruning.
What problems affect bushy clematis?
Scale, whiteflies, earwigs and aphids can visit. Wilt, powdery mildew, rust and leaf spots may occur. Water at the base, not over the leaves.
