How often to water hyacinth orchid in California

In July in the Central Valley, established hyacinth orchid in loam needs a deep watering about every 5 days: about 1.5 gallons each time for a plant 2 feet across, about 1.9 gallons a week. Hyacinth orchid is a hardy ground orchid from Japan and China that grows from corm-like pseudobulbs. Its pleated, fan-like leaves stay showy from spring through fall, and purple orchid flowers hang from short stems in spring to summer. It wants damp, well-drained, enriched soil in a sheltered spot in light shade, and it does not tolerate wet soil.

How this is worked out: established roots fill the top 1 foot of soil, and you water again when that soil has dried halfway. Loam soil holds about 1.5 inches of water per foot. Water the whole area the plant covers, and skip a watering after a good soaking rain.

Which soil do you have?

Dig down a few inches, take a handful of moist soil and squeeze it.

  • Sandy: gritty, falls apart when you open your hand, will not form a ball.
  • Loam: forms a soft ball that crumbles when you poke it.
  • Clay: forms a firm, sticky ball and squeezes out into a ribbon between thumb and finger.

Still not sure? Pick loam. Most garden beds sit between sand and clay.

How to measure plant width

A shrub with its width marked from one side to the other and the circle under it shaded blue

Measure across the plant, from the tips of the leaves on one side to the tips on the other.

Water the whole area the plant covers, shown in blue. The gallons here cover that area.

A wider plant means more gallons each watering, not more waterings. While it is young, measure again each spring.

How to tell it needs water

  • Soil dry an inch down around the leaves in spring or summer means hyacinth orchid needs water
  • Pleated leaves wilting or browning at the tips in heat can follow dry soil
  • Leaves yellowing in late fall is the normal start of dormancy
  • Pseudobulbs turning soft in winter-wet soil point to rot

How to water it

  • Keep the soil evenly damp from spring through the end of the growing season
  • Water gently at the base, then let the surface dry slightly
  • Plant in light shade in damp, well-drained, enriched soil
  • Set pseudobulbs no deeper than about 4 inches
  • Mulch well in late fall to protect the roots

Through the seasons

Water new plantings as growth begins in spring. Keep the soil evenly damp through bloom and the rest of the growing season, since the pseudobulbs store food for winter. Leaves die back in fall, and plants rest through winter. In very cold spots, mulch the bed well in late fall. WUCOLS rates hyacinth orchid moderate water on the north-central coast, in the Central Valley and on the south coast. WUCOLS has not evaluated it for South Inland, the high desert or the low desert.

In pots

Hyacinth orchid makes a good container plant for a shady patio. Use a rich, well-drained mix. Water when the top inch begins to dry, until it seeps from the bottom. In summer, check pots every day or two. Never let the pot sit in water. After flowering, keep watering through the growing season. In winter, while it is dormant, keep the mix barely damp.

How this is worked out: the WUCOLS water rating for each zone times that zone’s climate for the month. A dash means WUCOLS does not rate the plant there. The figures are what the plant uses, before sprinkler losses.

Plants with the same water needs 16

Rated moderate water in the Central Valley, like hyacinth orchid. Plants that drink alike can share one valve and one schedule.

Similar plants that need less water 16

Rated lower than hyacinth orchid in the Central Valley. Worth a look for a new bed or a lawn replacement.

Questions people ask

How often should I water hyacinth orchid in summer?

In July, established hyacinth orchid in loam needs a deep watering about every 5 days in the Central Valley and about every 7 days on the south coast. Sandy soil holds less water, so waterings come closer together. Clay stretches them. Check the soil before each watering and skip one after a soaking rain.

How much water does hyacinth orchid need per day?

In July in the Central Valley, established hyacinth orchid needs about 0.3 gallons a day for a plant 2 feet across and about 1.1 gallons a day for a plant 4 feet across. Give it in deep waterings spread days apart rather than a little every day, so the whole root zone gets wet.

Does watering for hyacinth orchid change across California?

Yes. WUCOLS rates hyacinth orchid separately for each of the six California climate zones: moderate water in the North-Central Coastal zone, moderate water in the Central Valley zone, moderate water in the South Coastal zone, not evaluated in the South Inland zone, not evaluated in the High and Intermediate Desert zone, not evaluated in the Low Desert zone. The monthly table above shows how the same rating translates into different gallon amounts as reference evapotranspiration changes.

Is hyacinth orchid hard to grow?

It is a hardy ground orchid that grows in garden soil. Give it light shade and damp, well-drained soil. Avoid wet soil.

Should I water hyacinth orchid after it blooms?

Yes, keep providing regular moisture for the rest of the growing season. The pseudobulbs store food for next year. Ease off when leaves die back.

How deep should I plant hyacinth orchid?

Plant the pseudobulbs no more than about 4 inches deep. Mulch in late fall. Divide clumps in fall.

What pests bother hyacinth orchid?

It has no known diseases or pests of note. Slugs and snails are occasional problems. Check new shoots in spring.

Can hyacinth orchid grow in sun?

It prefers a sheltered site in light shade. Keep it out of harsh, exposed spots. Keep the soil damp while it grows.
