How often to water media mahonia in California
In July in the Central Valley, established media mahonia in loam needs a deep watering about every 8 days: about 8.8 gallons each time for a plant 4 feet across, about 7.6 gallons a week. Media mahonia is a hybrid barberry shrub with spiny, glossy, holly-like leaves that take on a reddish tint in fall. Upright, spreading clusters of yellow flowers brighten it from winter into spring, followed by blue-black berries that birds love. It grows in many soils but likes evenly moist, well-drained, acidic soil in part shade.
How often to water media mahonia, month by month
Type your city above and the days between waterings and the gallons appear here, worked out from your city's climate table. Or read the figures by climate zone further down.
How this is worked out: established roots fill the top 1.5 feet of soil, and you water again when that soil has dried halfway. Loam soil holds about 1.5 inches of water per foot. Water the whole area the plant covers, and skip a watering after a good soaking rain.
How to tell it needs water
- Dry soil under the spiny canopy a few inches down in summer means media mahonia wants water
- Leaves turning dull and limp on a hot afternoon can point to a dry root zone
- Leaves yellowing in soggy ground point to poor drainage
- Seedlings popping up around the garden come from bird-spread berries, not water
How to water it
- Soak the soil deeply, keeping it evenly moist without letting it turn soggy
- Choose part shade with shelter from harsh winds
- Give it well-drained, acidic soil with organic matter
- Cut out suckers if you do not want a thicket
- Wear gloves around the spiny leaves
Through the seasons
Give a new shrub regular water through its first summer. Established plants want evenly moist soil, with moderate, deep watering through the dry months. Flowers open from winter to spring, and berries follow that birds spread around. It spreads slowly by suckers into small thickets. For the north-central coast, the Central Valley and South Inland, WUCOLS gives media mahonia a moderate water rating. The south coast and both deserts have no WUCOLS evaluation for it.
In pots
Media mahonia can grow in a large container in part shade, where its winter flowers light up a dull corner. Use an acidic, well-drained mix. Water when the top couple of inches dry, until it drains from the base. In summer, check every few days, since a pot dries much faster than the ground. Never let the pot sit in water. Keep it out of hot, windy spots. In winter, water when the mix dries.

How this is worked out: the WUCOLS water rating for each zone times that zone’s climate for the month. A dash means WUCOLS does not rate the plant there. The figures are what the plant uses, before sprinkler losses.

Questions people ask
How often should I water media mahonia in summer?
In July, established media mahonia in loam needs a deep watering about every 8 days in the Central Valley and about every 9 days in the South Inland zone. Sandy soil holds less water, so waterings come closer together. Clay stretches them. Check the soil before each watering and skip one after a soaking rain.
How much water does media mahonia need per day?
In July in the Central Valley, established media mahonia needs about 1.1 gallons a day for a plant 4 feet across and about 4.3 gallons a day for a plant 8 feet across. Give it in deep waterings spread days apart rather than a little every day, so the whole root zone gets wet.
Does watering for media mahonia change across California?
Yes. WUCOLS rates media mahonia separately for each of the six California climate zones: moderate water in the North-Central Coastal zone, moderate water in the Central Valley zone, not evaluated in the South Coastal zone, moderate water in the South Inland zone, not evaluated in the High and Intermediate Desert zone, not evaluated in the Low Desert zone. The monthly table above shows how the same rating translates into different gallon amounts as reference evapotranspiration changes.
When does media mahonia bloom?
It blooms from winter into spring with clusters of yellow flowers. Blue-black berries follow. Birds eat them.
Does media mahonia spread?
It spreads by suckers and can form thickets. Birds spread its seeds. Remove unwanted sprouts.
Does media mahonia need shade?
Part shade suits it best, with protection from harsh winds. Keep the soil evenly moist. Acidic soil helps too.
Are media mahonia leaves spiny?
Yes, the glossy, holly-like leaves are spiny. Wear gloves when pruning. Keep it back from paths.
Is media mahonia poisonous?
It has low severity poison characteristics. The bark, leaves, roots and sap can cause stomach upset, nausea and vomiting if eaten. Keep pets from chewing it.
