How often to water chocolate cosmos in California
In July in the Central Valley, established chocolate cosmos in loam needs a deep watering about every 5 days: about 1.5 gallons each time for a plant 2 feet across, about 1.9 gallons a week. Chocolate cosmos is a spreading tuberous perennial from Mexico with divided leaves and bowl-shaped, maroon-crimson flowers that really do smell of chocolate. Flowers keep coming from summer into autumn. It wants moderately fertile, moist but well-drained soil in full sun, and it is not reliably hardy where winters freeze.

Type your city above and the days between waterings and the gallons appear here, worked out from your city's climate table. Or read the figures by climate zone further down.
How this is worked out: established roots fill the top 1 foot of soil, and you water again when that soil has dried halfway. Loam soil holds about 1.5 inches of water per foot. Water the whole area the plant covers, and skip a watering after a good soaking rain.
How to tell it needs water
- A finger pushed beside the stems meeting dry soil a couple of inches down in summer means chocolate cosmos wants water
- Leaves and flower stems wilting in afternoon heat point to a dry root zone
- Fewer flowers in late summer can follow a dry spell
- Stems rotting at the base in soggy soil point to foot rot from too much water
How to water it
- Water at the base, keeping the soil moist but never soggy
- Let the top inch or two dry between waterings
- Plant in full sun in moderately fertile, well-drained soil
- Deadhead spent flowers to prolong blooming
- Mulch the crown in autumn
Through the seasons
Water new plants regularly as shoots appear. Established plants want moderate, steady moisture through summer and fall bloom, without soggy soil, which brings foot rot. It dies back in winter. Mulch the crown in autumn, and where frosts are hard, lift the tubers and store them frost free. Chocolate cosmos carries a moderate water rating from WUCOLS in South Inland and on the south coast, as well as in the Central Valley and on the north-central coast. The high desert and the low desert have no WUCOLS evaluation for it.
In pots
Chocolate cosmos is a great pot plant, which also makes winter care of its tubers easy. Use a moderately fertile, well-drained mix. Water when the top inch or two is dry, until it drains through. In summer, check every day or two, since a small pot dries quickly. Empty the saucer so the tuber does not rot. Deadhead often. In winter, keep the pot frost free and nearly dry.

Questions people ask
How often should I water chocolate cosmos in summer?
In July, established chocolate cosmos in loam needs a deep watering about every 5 days in the Central Valley, about every 7 days on the south coast and about every 6 days in the South Inland zone. Sandy soil holds less water, so waterings come closer together. Clay stretches them. Check the soil before each watering and skip one after a soaking rain.
How much water does chocolate cosmos need per day?
In July in the Central Valley, established chocolate cosmos needs about 0.3 gallons a day for a plant 2 feet across and about 1.1 gallons a day for a plant 4 feet across. Give it in deep waterings spread days apart rather than a little every day, so the whole root zone gets wet.
Does watering for chocolate cosmos change across California?
Yes. WUCOLS rates chocolate cosmos separately for each of the six California climate zones: moderate water in the North-Central Coastal zone, moderate water in the Central Valley zone, moderate water in the South Coastal zone, moderate water in the South Inland zone, not evaluated in the High and Intermediate Desert zone, not evaluated in the Low Desert zone. The monthly table above shows how the same rating translates into different gallon amounts as reference evapotranspiration changes.
Does chocolate cosmos really smell like chocolate?
Yes, its maroon-crimson flowers are chocolate scented. They also make good cut flowers. Plant it near a seat.
Is chocolate cosmos hardy?
It is not reliably hardy. Mulch the crown in autumn. Where frost is hard, lift the tubers and keep them frost free.
When does chocolate cosmos bloom?
It blooms from mid or late summer into fall. Deadheading prolongs flowering. Water steadily through bloom.
What problems affect chocolate cosmos?
It is generally pest free but can get foot rot and gray mold. Avoid soggy soil and wet leaves. Good drainage helps most.
Can chocolate cosmos grow in a pot?
Yes, it grows well in containers. Pots make it easy to protect the tuber in winter. Keep the mix nearly dry while it rests.
