How often to water yew pine in California
In July in the Central Valley, established yew pine in loam needs a deep watering about every 8 days: about 55 gallons each time under a 10 foot canopy, about 47 gallons a week. Yew pine, or podocarpus, is a slow-growing evergreen conifer from southern China, Taiwan and Japan with long, narrow, leathery leaves. It is usually a dense shrub but can become a tree up to 50 feet. It takes shearing well, so it is popular for hedges, screens and topiary. Its seeds are poisonous, though the fleshy red stalks under them are not.

Type your city above and the days between waterings and the gallons appear here, worked out from your city's climate table. Or read the figures by climate zone further down.
How this is worked out: established roots fill the top 1.5 feet of soil, and you water again when that soil has dried halfway. Loam soil holds about 1.5 inches of water per foot. Water the whole area under the branches, and skip a watering after a good soaking rain.
How to tell it needs water
- Soil dry 3 inches down under the shrub in summer means yew pine is ready for a deep watering
- Leaves dulling and new growth drooping in heat can indicate thirst
- Leaves yellowing in alkaline soil point to chlorosis, not water
- Yellowing and decline over wet, poorly drained soil point to root problems
How to water it
- Water at the base with drip or a soaker hose
- Wet the root zone deeply, then let the upper few inches dry
- Plant in rich, slightly acid, well-drained soil in sun to part shade
- Keep it out of soggy spots, since it does not tolerate wet soil
- Shear it to keep a hedge or topiary dense
Through the seasons
Water a new plant regularly through its first summer. Established plants are drought tolerant in mild weather but look best with moderate, deep watering through the dry months. It grows slowly and stays evergreen year round, and its crushed leaves are pleasantly fragrant. Salt tolerance makes it useful near the coast. WUCOLS rates yew pine moderate water on the north-central coast, in the Central Valley, on the south coast and in South Inland. The high desert and the low desert carry the same moderate water rating.
In pots
Yew pine grows well in containers, outdoors on patios and indoors in bright rooms. Use a rich, slightly acid, well-drained mix. Water when the top couple of inches dry, until it drains through. In summer, check outdoor pots every few days. Never let it sit in water, since it does not tolerate wet soil. Watch potted plants for scale. In winter, water only when the mix dries.

Questions people ask
How often should I water yew pine in summer?
In July, established yew pine in loam needs a deep watering about every 8 days in the Central Valley, about every 11 days on the south coast and about every 9 days in the South Inland zone. Sandy soil holds less water, so waterings come closer together. Clay stretches them. Check the soil before each watering and skip one after a soaking rain.
How much water does yew pine need per day?
In July in the Central Valley, established yew pine needs about 6.8 gallons a day under a 10 foot canopy and about 27 gallons a day under a 20 foot canopy. Give it in deep waterings spread days apart rather than a little every day, so the whole root zone gets wet.
Does watering for yew pine change across California?
Yes. WUCOLS rates yew pine separately for each of the six California climate zones: moderate water in the North-Central Coastal zone, moderate water in the Central Valley zone, moderate water in the South Coastal zone, moderate water in the South Inland zone, moderate water in the High and Intermediate Desert zone, moderate water in the Low Desert zone. The monthly table above shows how the same rating translates into different gallon amounts as reference evapotranspiration changes.
Is yew pine poisonous?
It has low severity poison characteristics. Children may be tempted by the round seeds, which are poisonous. Clean up fallen seeds where children play.
Can yew pine grow in shade?
Yes, it grows in full sun to partial shade and tolerates shade. Shade slows drying, so water less there. Growth is slow either way.
Why are my yew pine leaves yellow?
Yellowing often means chlorosis from alkaline soil. It prefers slightly acidic soil. Wet soil can also cause yellowing.
Is yew pine good for hedges?
Yes, it adapts well to shearing and makes a good hedge or screen. It is also used for topiary. It grows slowly, so hedges stay neat.
Is yew pine salt tolerant?
Yes, it is salt tolerant. That suits coastal gardens. It also shows some heat tolerance.
