How often to water Lenten rose in California
In July in the Central Valley, established Lenten rose in loam needs a deep watering about every 5 days: about 1.5 gallons each time for a plant 2 feet across, about 1.9 gallons a week. Lenten rose is a clumping evergreen perennial about a foot to 18 inches tall, with glossy, dark green, divided leaves. From late winter into spring, nodding cup-shaped flowers in white, pink and rose rise above the foliage. It is easy in a shady spot with moist, well-drained, neutral to alkaline soil, and all parts are toxic if eaten.

How this is worked out: established roots fill the top 1 foot of soil, and you water again when that soil has dried halfway. Loam soil holds about 1.5 inches of water per foot. Water the whole area the plant covers, and skip a watering after a good soaking rain.
How to tell it needs water
- Soil dry 2 inches down beside the clump in summer signals Lenten rose needs water
- Leaves wilting and staying limp into evening on hot days can indicate thirst
- Leaves scorching brown at the edges point to too much sun or heat as well as dry soil
- Crown and leaf bases turning black and soft in soggy soil suggest rot from poor drainage
How to water it
- Water the soil around the clump with drip or a gentle hose
- Soak about 8 inches down, then let the top inch or two dry
- Plant in shade with some winter light, sheltered from wind
- Use moist, well-drained, neutral to alkaline soil rich in organic matter
- Cut back old flowering stems after bloom to make way for new leaves
Through the seasons
Water a new clump regularly through its first summer while roots settle. Established plants still need moisture through the dry season, since they dislike heat and strong sun. It is evergreen in mild climates and flowers from late winter into spring, when rain often covers its needs. WUCOLS rates Lenten rose low water on the north-central coast. In the Central Valley, on the south coast and in South Inland it carries a moderate water rating. WUCOLS marks it as not suited to the high desert or the low desert.
In pots
Lenten rose grows well in a large pot in a shady corner, where its winter flowers can be seen up close. Use a rich, well-drained mix and water when the top inch dries, letting it drain. In summer heat, check every couple of days and keep the pot out of afternoon sun. Empty the saucer each time. In winter, rain may carry it, but check during dry spells while it blooms.

Questions people ask
How often should I water Lenten rose in summer?
In July, established Lenten rose in loam needs a deep watering about every 5 days in the Central Valley, about every 7 days on the south coast and about every 6 days in the South Inland zone. Sandy soil holds less water, so waterings come closer together. Clay stretches them. Check the soil before each watering and skip one after a soaking rain.
How much water does Lenten rose need per day?
In July in the Central Valley, established Lenten rose needs about 0.3 gallons a day for a plant 2 feet across and about 1.1 gallons a day for a plant 4 feet across. Give it in deep waterings spread days apart rather than a little every day, so the whole root zone gets wet.
Does watering for Lenten rose change across California?
Yes. WUCOLS rates Lenten rose separately for each of the six California climate zones: low water in the North-Central Coastal zone, moderate water in the Central Valley zone, moderate water in the South Coastal zone, moderate water in the South Inland zone, not suited to this region in the High and Intermediate Desert zone, not suited to this region in the Low Desert zone. The monthly table above shows how the same rating translates into different gallon amounts as reference evapotranspiration changes.
When does Lenten rose bloom?
It blooms in late winter and the flowers last into spring. Blooms nod on thick stems in clusters of one to four. Colors range from white to pink and rose.
Is Lenten rose poisonous?
Yes, the leaves, stems and roots are toxic if eaten. Keep children and pets away from it. Wear gloves when dividing.
Do deer eat Lenten rose?
It is resistant to deer browsing. Leaf damage is more often from sun or dry soil.
Should I cut back Lenten rose?
Cut back the flowering stems once bloom is done to promote new foliage. Remove old, tattered leaves as well. Water as new leaves grow.
Can Lenten rose take sun?
It does best in shade with some winter sunlight. It does not tolerate bright sun and high heat. Plant it under deciduous trees or on a shaded side.
