How often to water privet honeysuckle in California
In July in the Central Valley, established privet honeysuckle in loam needs a deep watering about every 8 days: about 8.8 gallons each time for a plant 4 feet across, about 7.6 gallons a week. Privet honeysuckle, also called box-leaf honeysuckle, is a low, evergreen to semi-evergreen shrub from China with small, glossy leaves on horizontal branches. Its branches root where they touch the soil and slowly spread, making it a useful groundcover on banks. Small fragrant flowers and mildly toxic berries hide beneath the leaves. It is salt tolerant.

Type your city above and the days between waterings and the gallons appear here, worked out from your city's climate table. Or read the figures by climate zone further down.
How this is worked out: established roots fill the top 1.5 feet of soil, and you water again when that soil has dried halfway. Loam soil holds about 1.5 inches of water per foot. Water the whole area the plant covers, and skip a watering after a good soaking rain.
How to tell it needs water
- Sunny plantings drooping and dull by afternoon in summer point to dry soil
- Soil dry 3 inches down under the branches in summer means privet honeysuckle can take a soak
- Leaves browning at the tips after a long dry spell in sun can follow too little water
- Leaves yellowing in heavy, soggy soil point to poor drainage
How to water it
- Water regularly in sunny spots and less in shade
- Plant in sun or part shade in humus-rich soil, or clay, loam or sand
- Use it on banks, slopes and seaside plantings
- Prune right after flowering, since it blooms on old growth
- Shear lightly for edging or a low hedge
Through the seasons
Water a new shrub regularly until established, which takes a season or two. In shade it gets by with little water once settled, but in sun it needs regular watering through the dry months. Its small fragrant flowers stay tucked under the leaves, and berries follow. WUCOLS rates privet honeysuckle moderate water on the north-central coast and in the Central Valley. WUCOLS has not evaluated it for the south coast, South Inland, the high desert or the low desert.
In pots
Privet honeysuckle can grow in a low, wide container or planter, trimmed into a neat mound or low hedge. Use a humus-rich, well-drained mix. Water when the top couple of inches dry, until the excess drains. In summer, check pots every few days, more often in sun. Do not let it sit in water at any time. In winter, water only when the mix dries between rains.

Questions people ask
How much water does privet honeysuckle need per day?
In July in the Central Valley, established privet honeysuckle needs about 1.1 gallons a day for a plant 4 feet across and about 4.3 gallons a day for a plant 8 feet across. Give it in deep waterings spread days apart rather than a little every day, so the whole root zone gets wet.
Does watering for privet honeysuckle change across California?
Yes. WUCOLS rates privet honeysuckle separately for each of the six California climate zones: moderate water in the North-Central Coastal zone, moderate water in the Central Valley zone, not evaluated in the South Coastal zone, not evaluated in the South Inland zone, not evaluated in the High and Intermediate Desert zone, not evaluated in the Low Desert zone. The monthly table above shows how the same rating translates into different gallon amounts as reference evapotranspiration changes.
Does privet honeysuckle need much water?
In shade it is fairly drought tolerant once established. In sun it needs regular watering. WUCOLS rates it moderate water where rated.
Can privet honeysuckle replace boxwood?
It is a useful substitute for boxwood in borders, edging and parterres. It shapes easily by pruning. It flowers on old growth.
Is privet honeysuckle salt tolerant?
Yes, it is salt tolerant and does well in seashore plantings. It suits coastal gardens. Water regularly in sun.
Are privet honeysuckle berries poisonous?
The berries are mildly toxic. They are hidden beneath the leaves. Keep children from eating them.
Is privet honeysuckle good on slopes?
Yes, its low branches root where they touch soil and slowly spread. It works as a groundcover on banks. Water until established.
