How often to water Shumard red oak in California
In July in the Central Valley, established Shumard red oak in loam needs a deep watering about every 8 days: about 55 gallons each time under a 10 foot canopy, about 47 gallons a week. Shumard red oak is a large deciduous tree of the red oak group, native to the eastern United States. It grows relatively fast, topping out near 70 feet with a 40-foot spread, pyramidal when young and more open and rounded with age. Its lobed leaves often turn a good red in fall. It tolerates urban conditions, air pollution, wind and short flooding.

How this is worked out: established roots fill the top 1.5 feet of soil, and you water again when that soil has dried halfway. Loam soil holds about 1.5 inches of water per foot. Water the whole area under the branches, and skip a watering after a good soaking rain.
How to tell it needs water
- Dry soil a foot down under the canopy in summer means Shumard red oak wants a deep soak
- Leaves curling and browning at the edges in a heat wave can follow dry soil
- Leaves dropping early in late summer can indicate drought stress
- Yellowing leaves in ground that stays wet for weeks suggest the roots are short of air
How to water it
- Soak the root zone slowly with a hose or drip ring out at the canopy edge
- Let the upper soil dry before the next deep watering
- Plant in full sun in average soil with room for a large crown
- Use it as a shade tree in a big yard, park or street
- Spread mulch over the root zone, clear of the trunk
Through the seasons
Water a young tree regularly through its first summers. Established trees want moderate, deep soaks through the dry season, more in the hot Central Valley than on the coast. Leaves turn red in fall and drop for winter, and the tree rests until spring. WUCOLS rates Shumard red oak moderate water on the north-central coast and in the Central Valley. WUCOLS marks it as not suited to South Inland, the high desert or the low desert, and has not evaluated it for the south coast.
In pots
Shumard red oak grows too big for a pot beyond its first year or two, so treat a container as a nursery stage. Keep a young tree in a deep container with a well-drained mix. Water when the top few inches dry, until water flows out below. In summer, check every couple of days, since a growing oak drinks fast. Pour off saucer water. Plant it out while it is small so its roots can spread.

Questions people ask
How much water does Shumard red oak need per day?
In July in the Central Valley, established Shumard red oak needs about 6.8 gallons a day under a 10 foot canopy and about 27 gallons a day under a 20 foot canopy. Give it in deep waterings spread days apart rather than a little every day, so the whole root zone gets wet.
Does watering for Shumard red oak change across California?
Yes. WUCOLS rates Shumard red oak separately for each of the six California climate zones: moderate water in the North-Central Coastal zone, moderate water in the Central Valley zone, not evaluated in the South Coastal zone, not suited to this region in the South Inland zone, not suited to this region in the High and Intermediate Desert zone, not suited to this region in the Low Desert zone. The monthly table above shows how the same rating translates into different gallon amounts as reference evapotranspiration changes.
How fast does Shumard red oak grow?
It is relatively fast growing for an oak. It reaches about 70 feet tall and 40 feet wide. Plan for a big tree.
Does Shumard red oak have fall color?
Its lobed leaves often turn a nice red in fall. Color varies by tree and season. Leaves drop for winter.
Can Shumard red oak take city conditions?
Yes, it tolerates urban conditions, air pollution and wind. It also handles short-term flooding. It suits streets and parks.
Does Shumard red oak support wildlife?
Yes, it hosts the larvae of the imperial moth and several hairstreak and duskywing butterflies. Acorns feed animals too. It is a valuable habitat tree.
Where does Shumard red oak grow best in California?
WUCOLS rates it only for the north-central coast and the Central Valley. It is marked not suited to South Inland and the deserts. Give it deep summer water in the valley.
