How often to water dappled snowbush in California
In July on the north-central coast, established dappled snowbush needs about 0.5 gallons a week for a plant 2 feet across. Dappled snowbush is an evergreen to semi-evergreen bulb from coastal South Africa with pairs of broad, fleshy leaves that lie flat on the ground. In late fall and early winter, foot-tall stalks carry brushlike heads of white stamens tipped yellow. Green-veined white bracts frame them, and red berries can follow. It wants bright shade and well-drained soil.
How often to water dappled snowbush, month by month
Type your city above and the days between waterings and the gallons appear here, worked out from your city's climate table. Or read the figures by climate zone further down.
How this is worked out: the plant’s WUCOLS rating times your city’s climate for the month, over the area the plant covers. Skip a watering after a good soaking rain.
How to tell it needs water
- Soil dry 2 inches down beside the bulb in late summer or fall signals dappled snowbush can use a soak
- Fleshy leaves turning thin and wrinkled can indicate a long dry spell
- Leaves yellowing and scorching in direct afternoon sun point to too much light rather than water
- A soft, rotting bulb neck in soggy soil suggests overwatering or poor drainage
How to water it
- Water around the bulbs, not onto the flat leaves, with a gentle hose
- Soak a few inches down, then let the soil dry before the next soak
- Plant in well-drained soil in bright shade, such as under high-canopy trees
- Leave room between bulbs so the flat leaves can lie open
- Mulch lightly between plantings to keep roots cool
Through the seasons
Water a new planting lightly until roots grow, then let soil dry between soaks. Established clumps are fairly undemanding, with regular to occasional water. Each year it adds two new leaves, and older leaves can persist, so it stays mostly evergreen. Flowers open in late fall and early winter. It is frost hardy into the mid 20s F, and plants under oaks have come through freezes undamaged. WUCOLS rates dappled snowbush low water on the north-central coast, on the south coast and in South Inland. WUCOLS has not evaluated it for the Central Valley, the high desert or the low desert.
In pots
Dappled snowbush is a handsome container bulb for a shady spot. Use a fast-draining, airy mix and a pot just wider than the leaves. Water when the top inch or two of mix is dry, letting it drain through. In summer heat, check every few days, and keep the pot in bright shade. Empty the saucer each time. In winter, water lightly and move the pot under cover when frost is forecast.

How this is worked out: the WUCOLS water rating for each zone times that zone’s climate for the month. A dash means WUCOLS does not rate the plant there. The figures are what the plant uses, before sprinkler losses.

Questions people ask
How much should I water dappled snowbush in summer?
In July, established dappled snowbush needs about 0.6 gallons on the south coast and 0.7 gallons in the South Inland zone each week, for a plant 2 feet across. Water deeply and let the top of the soil dry before the next watering. Skip a watering after a soaking rain.
How much water does dappled snowbush need per day?
In July on the north-central coast, established dappled snowbush needs about 0.1 gallons a day for a plant 2 feet across and about 0.3 gallons a day for a plant 4 feet across. Give it in deep waterings spread days apart rather than a little every day, so the whole root zone gets wet.
Does watering for dappled snowbush change across California?
Yes. WUCOLS rates dappled snowbush separately for each of the six California climate zones: low water in the North-Central Coastal zone, not evaluated in the Central Valley zone, low water in the South Coastal zone, low water in the South Inland zone, not evaluated in the High and Intermediate Desert zone, not evaluated in the Low Desert zone. The monthly table above shows how the same rating translates into different gallon amounts as reference evapotranspiration changes.
When does dappled snowbush bloom?
It flowers in late fall to early winter. The white brushlike heads sit on stalks about a foot tall. Red berries can form if the flowers are pollinated.
Can dappled snowbush grow under trees?
Yes, it looks good planted in groups under trees in bright shade. Plants under oaks have handled freezes undamaged. Avoid spots with soggy soil.
How cold can dappled snowbush get?
Cold into the mid 20s F does little harm, and some protection takes it lower. Overhead tree cover helps. Move potted plants under cover in cold snaps.
Why does my snowbush have only two leaves?
It produces two leaves held opposite each other each year. Older pairs can persist, so mature plants carry several. New leaves are a sign of a healthy bulb.
Can dappled snowbush take full sun?
It prefers bright shade or cool, gentle sun. Hot afternoon sun scorches the flat leaves. Shade also slows drying.
