How often to water white forsythia in California
In July in the Central Valley, established white forsythia in loam needs a deep watering about every 8 days: about 8.8 gallons each time for a plant 4 feet across, about 7.6 gallons a week. White forsythia, also called Korean abelialeaf, is a compact shrub from Korea, where it is endangered in the wild. It stays about 3 to 5 feet tall and slightly narrower. White, sometimes pink-tinged flowers cover its stems in spring, and its winged fruits look like elm seeds.

Type your city above and the days between waterings and the gallons appear here, worked out from your city's climate table. Or read the figures by climate zone further down.
How this is worked out: established roots fill the top 1.5 feet of soil, and you water again when that soil has dried halfway. Loam soil holds about 1.5 inches of water per foot. Water the whole area the plant covers, and skip a watering after a good soaking rain.
How to tell it needs water
- Leaves hanging limp by midafternoon on a warm day suggest white forsythia is short of water
- A finger pushed into the soil under the stems that comes out dry and dusty in summer means it is time to water
- An untidy, leggy look after bloom is normal and is fixed by pruning
- Pale leaves on a plant sitting in waterlogged ground point to poor drainage
How to water it
- Give a slow, thorough soak, then wait for the upper soil to dry out
- Choose full sun for the best bloom, though part shade works
- Any soil that drains will do
- Cut stems back soon after the flowers fade
- Every few years, prune hard to renew a ragged shrub
Through the seasons
A newly planted white forsythia needs regular water through its first summer. After that, moderate, deep soaks through the dry months keep it healthy. Flowers open in spring, then leaves follow and the shrub looks plain until fall, so plant perennials in front of it. On the north-central coast and in the Central Valley, WUCOLS gives white forsythia a moderate water rating. It is marked not suited to the south coast. South Inland and both deserts have no WUCOLS evaluation for it.
In pots
White forsythia can live in a big tub on a patio, where its spring flowers are easy to enjoy. Choose a mix that drains freely. When the upper two inches feel dry, pour until water runs out the bottom. Hot weather calls for a check twice a week. Do not leave water sitting under the pot. Cut it back once flowering ends. While the stems are bare in winter, add water only after the mix dries.

Questions people ask
How much water does white forsythia need per day?
In July in the Central Valley, established white forsythia needs about 1.1 gallons a day for a plant 4 feet across and about 4.3 gallons a day for a plant 8 feet across. Give it in deep waterings spread days apart rather than a little every day, so the whole root zone gets wet.
Does watering for white forsythia change across California?
Yes. WUCOLS rates white forsythia separately for each of the six California climate zones: moderate water in the North-Central Coastal zone, moderate water in the Central Valley zone, not suited to this region in the South Coastal zone, not evaluated in the South Inland zone, not evaluated in the High and Intermediate Desert zone, not evaluated in the Low Desert zone. The monthly table above shows how the same rating translates into different gallon amounts as reference evapotranspiration changes.
Is white forsythia a true forsythia?
No, it is a different shrub, Abeliophyllum, in the olive family from Korea. The common name refers to its white spring flowers. Its care is simple.
When should I prune white forsythia?
Prune right after flowering. It can be cut back hard every few years to fix a ragged look. Water after pruning.
Can white forsythia grow in shade?
It prefers full sun but tolerates partial shade. Expect fewer flowers in shade. Water less there.
How big does white forsythia get?
It reaches 3 to 5 feet tall with a 3 to 4 foot spread. It suits small gardens. Plant it in small groups for a spring show.
Is white forsythia rare?
It is considered endangered in the wild in Korea. It is grown in gardens. Buy nursery-grown plants.
