How often to water Thanksgiving cactus in California
In July on the north-central coast, established Thanksgiving cactus needs about 0.5 gallons a week for a plant 2 feet across. Thanksgiving cactus is a spineless, cascading cactus from the coastal rainforests of southeastern Brazil, where it grows on trees and rocks. Its flat, segmented stems have pointed edges, and bright tubular flowers appear around late November. Unlike desert cacti, it likes partial shade, humidity and a moist but well-drained mix.
How often to water Thanksgiving cactus, month by month
Type your city above and the days between waterings and the gallons appear here, worked out from your city's climate table. Or read the figures by climate zone further down.
How this is worked out: the plant’s WUCOLS rating times your city’s climate for the month, over the area the plant covers. Skip a watering after a good soaking rain.
How to tell it needs water
- Mix dry an inch down in a pot or bed signals Thanksgiving cactus is ready for water
- Stem segments looking limp and wrinkled can indicate thirst
- Stems turning yellow or reddish in strong sun point to too much light rather than dry soil
- Segments dropping and soft bases over wet mix suggest overwatering and root rot
- Few or no flowers in fall can follow warm nights and dim light rather than water trouble
How to water it
- Water the mix around the plant until it drains, then let the top inch dry
- Use a loose, well-drained cactus or succulent mix
- Give it partial shade, especially in summer, so stems do not yellow
- Keep it in a slightly pot-bound container rather than a large bed
- Grow it in a hanging basket or tall pot where the stems can cascade
Through the seasons
Keep a new plant lightly moist while it settles. New growth starts in spring. It blooms around Thanksgiving, sometimes again in February. Cool nights in fall help set buds. In winter, give it bright light and avoid overwatering. In summer, partial shade keeps the stems green. On the north-central coast, WUCOLS rates Thanksgiving cactus low water. WUCOLS has not evaluated it for the Central Valley, the south coast, South Inland, the high desert or the low desert.
In pots
Thanksgiving cactus is almost always grown in a pot. Water when the top inch of mix is dry and let it drain through the holes. Never leave it in a full saucer. In summer, keep it in partial shade outdoors, checking every few days. Repot only every three years or so, since it likes being slightly pot-bound. Bring it indoors or under cover before cold nights.

Questions people ask
How much water does Thanksgiving cactus need per day?
In July on the north-central coast, established Thanksgiving cactus needs about 0.1 gallons a day for a plant 2 feet across and about 0.3 gallons a day for a plant 4 feet across. Give it in deep waterings spread days apart rather than a little every day, so the whole root zone gets wet.
Does watering for Thanksgiving cactus change across California?
Yes. WUCOLS rates Thanksgiving cactus separately for each of the six California climate zones: low water in the North-Central Coastal zone, not evaluated in the Central Valley zone, not evaluated in the South Coastal zone, not evaluated in the South Inland zone, not evaluated in the High and Intermediate Desert zone, not evaluated in the Low Desert zone. The monthly table above shows how the same rating translates into different gallon amounts as reference evapotranspiration changes.
How do I get my Thanksgiving cactus to bloom?
Several cool nights around 40 degrees F in fall help trigger buds. Bright light in winter also helps.
What is the difference from Christmas cactus?
Thanksgiving cactus has pointed projections on its stem edges, and its flowers face outward. Christmas cactus has rounded stem edges and hanging flowers. Both are watered the same way.
Why are my Thanksgiving cactus stems turning yellow?
Too much summer sun yellows the stems. Move it to partial shade. Check that the mix is not staying soggy as well.
How do I propagate Thanksgiving cactus?
Cut two or three stem segments and let them callus for a few days. Plant them in moist, well-draining mix. Water only when the mix is completely dry until roots form.
Does Thanksgiving cactus need humidity?
Yes, it comes from humid rainforests and likes high humidity. A bright bathroom is a popular indoor spot. Outdoors, a shaded, sheltered porch suits it.
