How often to water Encore azalea in California
In July in the Central Valley, established Encore azalea in loam needs a deep watering about every 8 days: about 8.8 gallons each time for a plant 4 feet across, about 7.6 gallons a week. Encore azalea is a group of evergreen azaleas, 2 to 5 feet tall, that bloom heavily in spring and again in summer and fall. Flowers come in white, pinks, purples and reds. They like some sun with afternoon shade, and acidic, organic soil that stays moist but drains well, since many are prone to root rot.
How often to water Encore azalea, month by month
Type your city above and the days between waterings and the gallons appear here, worked out from your city's climate table. Or read the figures by climate zone further down.
How this is worked out: established roots fill the top 1.5 feet of soil, and you water again when that soil has dried halfway. Loam soil holds about 1.5 inches of water per foot. Water the whole area the plant covers, and skip a watering after a good soaking rain.
How to tell it needs water
- Soil dry an inch or two down under the mulch in summer signals Encore azalea needs water
- Leaves curling and wilting in afternoon sun can indicate thirst
- Flower buds browning and dropping can follow a dry spell
- Wilting, leaf loss and branch dieback while the soil stays wet point to Phytophthora root rot
- Pale, stippled leaves with dark specks underneath point to lace bugs rather than water
How to water it
- Water the shallow root zone with drip under the mulch, not over the leaves
- Soak 6 to 8 inches down, then let the top inch dry
- Plant high in acidic, organic soil, on a berm where drainage is poor
- Keep a 3 inch layer of organic mulch over the roots
- Give it 4 to 6 hours of sun with shade in the afternoon
Through the seasons
Keep a new azalea evenly moist through its first summer while roots grow into the surrounding soil. Established plants still need regular water, since their roots are shallow. It is evergreen and blooms in spring, summer and fall, so water matters across much of the year. Avoid overwatering in every season, since root rot is the main threat. The Central Valley is the one region WUCOLS has rated, giving Encore azalea a moderate water rating there. For the coastal regions, South Inland and both deserts, WUCOLS has not evaluated it.
In pots
Encore azaleas make excellent container shrubs. Use an acidic, organic potting mix with good drainage. Water when the top inch is dry, until it runs out the holes. In summer heat, check every day or two. Empty the saucer so roots do not rot. Shade the pot in the afternoon and shelter it from hard frost in winter. A pot also lets you control soil acidity where garden soil is alkaline.

Questions people ask
How much water does Encore azalea need per day?
In July in the Central Valley, established Encore azalea needs about 1.1 gallons a day for a plant 4 feet across and about 4.3 gallons a day for a plant 8 feet across. Give it in deep waterings spread days apart rather than a little every day, so the whole root zone gets wet.
Does watering for Encore azalea change across California?
Yes. WUCOLS rates Encore azalea separately for each of the six California climate zones: not evaluated in the North-Central Coastal zone, moderate water in the Central Valley zone, not evaluated in the South Coastal zone, not evaluated in the South Inland zone, not evaluated in the High and Intermediate Desert zone, not evaluated in the Low Desert zone. The monthly table above shows how the same rating translates into different gallon amounts as reference evapotranspiration changes.
Why is my Encore azalea not reblooming?
Too much shade cuts flowering. Aim for 4 to 6 hours of sun with afternoon shade. Keep the soil evenly moist through summer as new buds form.
Why is my azalea dying from the bottom up?
Wilting, leaf loss and dieback in wet soil point to Phytophthora root rot. Improve drainage with organic matter or a berm. Avoid overwatering and overfeeding.
Do Encore azaleas need deadheading?
No, they need no deadheading and very little pruning. Light shaping now and then is enough. Watering stays the same.
Can Encore azaleas take full sun?
They handle more sun than many azaleas, but afternoon shade gives the best results. Hot afternoon sun scorches leaves. Keep mulch thick in sunny spots.
Do deer eat Encore azaleas?
Yes, they are frequently damaged by deer. Fencing or repellents may be needed. Chewed leaves are not a water problem.
