How often to water golden wood millet in California

In July on the north-central coast, established golden wood millet needs about 1.1 gallons a week for a plant 2 feet across. Golden wood millet, also sold as Bowles' golden grass, is the yellow-leaved form of wood millet, Milium effusum 'Aureum'. It forms loose, arching clumps of soft yellow leaves up to about 1 1/2 feet tall. Airy, nodding sprays of yellow flowers rise above them in early summer. It lights up part shade and needs humus-rich soil that stays moist.

How this is worked out: the plant’s WUCOLS rating times your city’s climate for the month, over the area the plant covers. Skip a watering after a good soaking rain.

Which soil do you have?

Dig down a few inches, take a handful of moist soil and squeeze it.

  • Sandy: gritty, falls apart when you open your hand, will not form a ball.
  • Loam: forms a soft ball that crumbles when you poke it.
  • Clay: forms a firm, sticky ball and squeezes out into a ribbon between thumb and finger.

Still not sure? Pick loam. Most garden beds sit between sand and clay.

How to measure plant width

A shrub with its width marked from one side to the other and the circle under it shaded blue

Measure across the plant, from the tips of the leaves on one side to the tips on the other.

Water the whole area the plant covers, shown in blue. The gallons here cover that area.

A wider plant means more gallons each watering, not more waterings. While it is young, measure again each spring.

How to tell it needs water

  • Leaf tips browning in sun as the soil dries show it needs more water or more shade
  • Soil dry an inch down around the clump means it is time to water
  • Clumps yellowing at the base and rotting in soil that stays soggy point to poor drainage
  • Untidy dead foliage in early spring calls for a cleanup, not extra water

How to water it

  • Run low-flow drip beside each clump so the root zone never dries out completely
  • Soak about 6 inches deep, and water again before the surface dries out
  • Plant in humus-rich, moderately fertile soil in part shade
  • Grow it in sun only where you can keep the soil constantly moist
  • Remove dead leaves and old flower stems in spring, and divide clumps in mid-spring

Through the seasons

Keep new plants evenly moist until they root in. The airy flower sprays appear in early summer above the yellow leaves. It is semi-evergreen, so some foliage lasts through winter. Summer is the hard season, since dry soil in sun or heat does not suit it. Winter rain usually covers it on the north-central coast. On the north-central coast, golden wood millet rates moderate water in WUCOLS. WUCOLS has not evaluated it for the Central Valley, the south coast, South Inland, the high desert or the low desert.

In pots

Golden wood millet brightens a shady container, where its yellow leaves spill over the rim. Fill a pot that has drainage holes with a humus-rich mix that holds moisture. During warm spells, feel the mix every day or so and water before the top inch dries out. Let excess drain away, then empty the saucer. Tidy dead leaves in spring, and keep the mix lightly damp through winter.

Questions people ask

How much water does golden wood millet need per day?

In July on the north-central coast, established golden wood millet needs about 0.2 gallons a day for a plant 2 feet across and about 0.7 gallons a day for a plant 4 feet across. Give it in deep waterings spread days apart rather than a little every day, so the whole root zone gets wet.

Does watering for golden wood millet change across California?

Yes. WUCOLS rates golden wood millet separately for each of the six California climate zones: moderate water in the North-Central Coastal zone, not evaluated in the Central Valley zone, not evaluated in the South Coastal zone, not evaluated in the South Inland zone, not evaluated in the High and Intermediate Desert zone, not evaluated in the Low Desert zone. The monthly table above shows how the same rating translates into different gallon amounts as reference evapotranspiration changes.

Is golden wood millet the same as Bowles' golden grass?

Yes. Both names refer to the golden form of wood millet, sold as Milium effusum 'Aureum'. It is grown for its soft yellow foliage.

Can golden wood millet grow in sun?

Only where the soil stays constantly moist. It does not tolerate full sun on poor, dry soil. Part shade suits it best.

When should I cut back golden wood millet?

In spring, remove dead foliage and the old flowered stems. Fresh leaves soon fill the clump.

How do I propagate golden wood millet?

Sow seed where you want it to grow in spring, or divide established clumps in mid-spring. Keep new plants moist until they settle.

Can you overwater golden wood millet?

Yes. It wants moist but well-drained soil, and ground that stays soggy rots the clumps. Keep the soil damp, not waterlogged.
