How often to water potato vine in California
In July in the Central Valley, established potato vine in loam needs a deep watering about every 8 days: about 2.2 gallons each time for a plant 2 feet across, about 1.9 gallons a week. Potato vine is a fast-growing, twining vine from South America that quickly covers a trellis or fence, evergreen in mild climates. Clusters of fragrant, star-shaped white flowers bloom profusely, nearly year round where winters are mild. It is in the nightshade family, and all parts are highly poisonous. It grows in sun or light shade and tolerates cold to about 20 degrees F.

How this is worked out: established roots fill the top 1.5 feet of soil, and you water again when that soil has dried halfway. Loam soil holds about 1.5 inches of water per foot. Water the whole area the plant covers, and skip a watering after a good soaking rain.
How to tell it needs water
- Soil dry 3 inches down at the base of the vine in summer means potato vine needs water
- Leaves wilting at the tips in afternoon heat point to a dry root zone
- Leaves dropping after a hard freeze point to cold damage
- Yellowing leaves in soggy soil point to poor drainage
How to water it
- Water deeply, then let the top couple of inches dry
- Plant in full sun to light shade in fertile, well-drained soil
- Train it on a trellis, fence or arbor
- Prune in spring to control its size
- Keep children and pets from chewing it
Through the seasons
Water a new vine regularly while it climbs. Established vines want moderate water through the warm months, with deeper soaks in inland heat. Flowers come nearly all year in mild areas, heaviest from summer to fall, and the vine stays evergreen where winters are mild. WUCOLS rates potato vine moderate water on the north-central coast, in the Central Valley, on the south coast, in South Inland and in the low desert. WUCOLS marks it as not suited to the high desert.
In pots
Potato vine grows well in a large container with a trellis, or spills from a window box. Use a fertile, well-drained mix. Water when the top inch or two dries, until it drains. In summer, check every couple of days, since a fast vine in a pot dries quickly. Empty the saucer. Prune in spring to keep it in bounds. In winter, water when the mix dries.

How this is worked out: the WUCOLS water rating for each zone times that zone’s climate for the month. A dash means WUCOLS does not rate the plant there. The figures are what the plant uses, before sprinkler losses.

Questions people ask
How often should I water potato vine in summer?
In July, established potato vine in loam needs a deep watering about every 8 days in the Central Valley, about every 11 days on the south coast and about every 9 days in the South Inland zone. Sandy soil holds less water, so waterings come closer together. Clay stretches them. Check the soil before each watering and skip one after a soaking rain.
How much water does potato vine need per day?
In July in the Central Valley, established potato vine needs about 0.3 gallons a day for a plant 2 feet across and about 1.1 gallons a day for a plant 4 feet across. Give it in deep waterings spread days apart rather than a little every day, so the whole root zone gets wet.
Does watering for potato vine change across California?
Yes. WUCOLS rates potato vine separately for each of the six California climate zones: moderate water in the North-Central Coastal zone, moderate water in the Central Valley zone, moderate water in the South Coastal zone, moderate water in the South Inland zone, not suited to this region in the High and Intermediate Desert zone, moderate water in the Low Desert zone. The monthly table above shows how the same rating translates into different gallon amounts as reference evapotranspiration changes.
Is potato vine poisonous?
Yes, it has high severity poison characteristics. It is in the nightshade family. Keep children and pets from eating it.
How fast does potato vine grow?
It grows fast and can quickly cover a trellis or fence, reaching 30 feet. Prune in spring to control size. Give it a strong support.
When does potato vine bloom?
In mild climates it can bloom almost year round, with the most flowers from summer to fall. The flowers are fragrant. Water steadily for more bloom.
Is potato vine frost hardy?
It tolerates cold to about 20 degrees F and stays evergreen in mild winters. Colder snaps may damage it. It usually regrows.
Can potato vine grow in shade?
It grows in sun or light shade. More sun means more flowers. Shade slows drying.
